James Daggs was shot at Crestline last night by Officer Sims, and died a few minutes later.
Daggs is about 35 years of age and was born and raised in Crestline, but left there about a year ago very suddenly, as he was badly wanted on a charge of assault with intent to kill. He returned a few days ago, claimed to be a United States detective and was there to investigate the report that Crestline saloon men were selling adulterated liquors. Daggs had been drunk for several days, and early last evening, entered the Big Four telegraph office and said he wished to send a message. As that office does not handle Western Union business the operator said he could not send the message and directed him to the Western Union office.
Upon the operator's refusal, Daggs became insolent and was ordered out of the office. Instead of leaving he drew a revolver and threatened to shoot the operator, who became alarmed and went for an officer. Officer Gamble attempted to arrest Daggs, who again drew his revolver. The officer went to the mayor and procured a warrant for Daggs' arrest. Officers Gamble and Sims searched for Daggs to serve the warrant and found him in Brown & Trimble's Hardware store, where he was buying some cartridges. Gamble ordered him to throw up his hands, but he drew a revolver and leveled it at Gamble. Officer Sims shot to save his brother officer and Daggs fell, fatally shot through the left side, expiring a few minutes later.
Neither of the officers have been arrested and likely will not be. The coroner held an inquest this afternoon but will not announce his verdict until tomorrow.
Officers Gamble and Sims are efficient policeman and, it will be remembered, they actively participated in the efforts made by the Crestline and Mansfield authorities to ferret out the murderers of Frederick Boebel.
